Explore SC: Destination, Greenville

In our continuing fashion/travel series, the CH2 creative team explores local destinations in search of the best things to eat, see and do.

The Travel Channel recently dubbed Greenville The South’s Next Big Charming Destination, and after visiting last month, we wholeheartedly agree. Think Charleston, before it exploded in popularity—but with mountains in the distance instead of the ocean. One of the first things you notice is how extraordinarily well the downtown area was planned. Water features, green space and artwork with meaning all contribute to a vibrant, pedestrian-friendly city hub. Many hotels are within walking distance of everything and (bonus!) most are dog friendly. Cafés with alfresco seating, boutiques, and coffee shops line Main Street, and all roads seem to lead to the scenic Reedy Creek Park, where the waterfalls are the main event.

The WXYZ Bar at the Aloft Hotel offers signature cocktails and small plates in an artsy, compartmentalized space. There are plenty of games to play, and each area feels like its own “living room.” The outdoor space overlooks One City Plaza, a twinkly-light-covered square with several restaurants and shops.

The West Village is a hotbed of art and culture, with over 50 art galleries, shops and restaurants only two miles from downtown. We spent an afternoon at the Greenville Center for Creative Arts (GCCA), where everyone is welcome to peruse the current exhibitions, arrange for a docent-led tour, or try their hand at creating, with numerous classes offered during the fall session. Local artists are on hand creating in private spaces on the top floor of the gallery, and we had the pleasure of meeting Louisa-Pyle Kirk on our visit. The GCCA is located in the historic Brandon Mill Cloth Building, which can be rented for events and is an interesting setting for a cocktail party or even a wedding.
