Cinemark Bluffton: Movie-Going in Luxury

Author: Kitty Bartell

The movie-going experience has come nearly full circle since Gone with the Wind was released in 1939—a time when theater owners made seeing a movie something special. The story goes … one of the premier showings of Gone with the Wind was scheduled at the Fox Theatre on Woodward Avenue in Detroit, and a pair of young ladies from Lansing were buying new hats for the occasion. Getting in their car, the pair drove the 90 miles at a break-neck speed of 45 miles per hour, found their seats in the glamorous theater, and watched the nearly four-hour epic, delighted. Upon exiting the theater, a gust of wind blew one of their hats up into the air, never to be seen again. “Oh my, I guess my new hat is ‘Gone with the Wind,’” she exclaimed. It was an experience they would not forget for the rest of their lives.

Today, from the masterminds at their Plano, Texas headquarters, to the local theater ticket-takers and concession sellers, the team at Cinemark Theatres is innovating and working hard to make movie-going a customizable, fun, entertaining, experience. Here in the Lowcountry, Cinemark Bluffton has completed a full luxury lounger remodel, removing the traditional seats from all 12 of their theaters and installing chairs where the backs recline as the foot rests elevate—chairs that have transformed the movie-going experience. “They [guests] love them, because it really is a very comfortable night out,” said Hope Bruens, Cinemark marketing manager. “This makes it a much higher level, much more enjoyable experience.” Reserved seating is another way Cinemark is enhancing movie-going.

Under the direction of Chief Executive Officer, and 30-year Walt Disney Company veteran, Mark Zoradi, the family of 533 Cinemark theaters, gives their guests a state-of-the-art, digital viewing experience, with neighborhood locations customizing content and food and beverage choices. With partner Fathom Events, Cinemark Bluffton brings performances of the Metropolitan Opera to the big screen and offers the Summer Movie Clubhouse for families. “We customize the content for the theater and bring the best entertainment options,” Bruens said. “In some of our locations, we have gaming, we have live concerts, and live and pre-recorded sports.”

A nearly mandatory part of going to the movies includes coming away from the concession with an armload of sweet and savory goodies. At Cinemark Bluffton, the popcorn is hot and buttery … if you like. The drinks include sodas and ICEEs, Starbucks beverages, and other enticing bottled choices. Food choices are ever-changing: candies, hot dogs, nachos, specialty snacks, and so much more.

“Our theaters are entertainment destinations where you can buy a seat and watch a movie and relax,” Bruens said. “We try to give the guests the best experience possible and make the dollars they have to spend on entertainment a real bargain.”

Cinemark Theatres is making the movie-going experience something special … like Gone with the Wind, definitely not soon to be forgotten.
