A Day on Daufuskie Island

Author: Special to CH2 | Photographer: M.Kat Photography

Why is the rum Always Gone?
First stop, a tour of the Daufuskie Island Rum Company, where we learned about the distillery process and picked up a bottle of the Kona coffee-flavored rum. Delicious!

But First, Coffee
A day on the island should include a stop at the Mary Fields Schoolhouse, a place made famous by Pat Conroy’s novel, The Water is Wide. Here you can sit a spell and enjoy cappuccino and a muffin at School Grounds Coffee. This quaint caffeine stop takes up the space that used to be the schoolhouse cafeteria and is run by friendly locals Brian and Pam. If you wander to the front of the building, you will find Daufuskie Blues, a clothing shop where all items are being dyed various shades of indigo (an indigenous crop) right in front of your eyes.

Earrings – $29,

The Haig Point Lighthouse
There is no better view on Daufuskie Island than the one from this expansive front porch over-looking Calibogue Sound. Built in 1872, this two-bedroom guesthouse with a 40-foot tall tower served as a beacon for seamen from 1873 through the 1930s. Rumor has it the place is watched over by Maggie Comer, the friendly ghost of the first lighthouse keeper’s daughter.

Grab a Beer and a Bite
Freeport Marina is the site of a bustling little Daufuskie “village” where you can rent a golf cart for exploring, a cabin for sleeping, and have lunch at the Old Daufuskie Crab Company. The nearby general store offers staples, along with a selection of Spartina 449 handbags, an accessory line inspired by the island. Sip on some Scrap Iron Moonshine and try the Daufuskie Deviled Crab while you watch dolphins play from your picnic table on the water.

First Union African Baptist Church
Most maps of the island will have this historical church marked as a must-see attraction. Built in 1885 (after a fire destroyed the original built in 1881), this house of worship still holds weekly Sunday services for the small population (around 400 residents) of Daufuskie Island.

The Gullah Diva
Sallie Ann Robinson, a native Daufuskie Islander, affectionately known as the Gullah Diva, offers tours of the island and can answer questions about the Gullah culture you haven’t even thought of yet. To spend an afternoon with Sallie, or to buy one of her famous cookbooks, check out thegullahdiva.com.

Bring a piece of Daufuskie Island home—or have it shipped to your beach cottage.
