March 2018: Editor's Note

I just laughed out loud, repeatedly, while reading Justin Jarrett’s article on page 121. Jarrett was a sports writer for The Island Packet and has recently joined our team of contributing writers to share his adventures in child-rearing. In keeping with our special section on culinary delights, he rips on a recent New York Times Cooking e-blast offering suggestions on recipes for little ones. Whether you have children or not, believe me, you will find this amusing.

For the most part, this issue is dedicated to the home and food, with a sprinkling of upcoming events in March. After the long, cold winter we’ve had, locals will be ready to get out there and mix and mingle at events like the Hilton Head Island St. Patrick’s Day parade and The Island Rec Center’s WingFest. I know my year isn’t complete if I don’t see Joe Cain marching through Shelter Cove Park with a chicken wing on his head. Like the robin appearing in upstate New York—it hails the beginning of the season.

Speaking of things that hail spring, have you seen the Harbour Town lighthouse lately? It is resplendent in plaid in honor of the RBC Heritage’s fiftieth anniversary. Check out the photo our very own Bailey Atkinson took (page 129) of the newly finished pier in Sea Pines and our fancy new icon. Who’s ready to party in plaid? We are! Oh, yes, and to also, ahem, watch some golf.

For you serious readers looking out for your financial welfare, check out Kent Thune’s article on page 89, where he discusses how to take advantage of the new tax law. Is fun and frivolity your focus? Then jump on over to the Five Must-Dos for March (page 33). I also recommend reading Becca Edwards’ article about Marching to the Beat of Your Own Drum. Good advice for everyone; after all, what is “normal” anyway?

Have a great month everyone! I’ll see you at some festival with a drink in hand. I won’t be the one wearing a chicken wing on my head.
