THE FACE PLACE by kc :This Way to the Fountain of Youth

Author: Linda S. Hopkins

It’s been quite a few years (at least 20, but who’s counting?) since I looked in the mirror and saw the first fine lines beginning to form around my eyes. At age 60, I’m now a full-fledged member of the anti-aging brigade, in desperate search of the fountain of youth. I have enough serums, creams and magic potions to rid the whole planet of wrinkles, if only it were that simple.

Call me old-fashioned, but so far, I have not had the courage or desire to go under knife or needle. But just when I resigned myself to aging gracefully, in walked the angel of ageless skin, Kathy Cooksey! Under her skilled hands, I may need to start removing candles from my cake next year.

Cooksey herself has a face that defies her age but invites you to ask her secret. Turns out, it’s not a particular product or service. It’s knowing the right one and the right way. But perhaps what sets her apart even more is her passion. “I really care about what I do for you and what your results are,” she said. “I absolutely love what I do. It’s why I’m still working.”

Some of that passion goes back to her roots. What subconsciously inspired her interest in beauty was her mother, who at age 94, still makes up her face every day. Born with a malformation of her lip, she would draw lips on her face every day, Cooksey explained. “I remember sitting on the side of the sink as a child, watching her put on her lips.”

In the beauty business for over 40 years, Cooksey started as a hairstylist and platform artist. She later became a highly sought-after makeup artist and trainer, working for the Estee Lauder Company. She went on to study paramedical makeup, learning that trade in Los Angeles. In the 1980s, she opened her first business (also known as The Face Place), in Erie, Pennsylvania, where she offered paramedical, bridal, photographic and runway makeup services.

She later trained as an esthetician in Charleston, S.C. and fell in love with skincare. In 2004, she opened a full-service day spa in Moss Creek Village (Arbor Door Day Spa), and many clients who came to her then are still coming to her now. Meanwhile, she has continued her education, keeping up with the latest anti-aging techniques and beauty products.

Today, she is a one-woman show, operating out of a studio spa since 2014, and relying mostly on word-of-mouth to bring new customers to her door. Don’t expect a fancy reception area or champagne while you wait. But once inside Cooksey’s tiny treatment room, you will be transported to someplace close to heaven. A warm bed, twinkly lights, candles and soothing music create the perfect ambiance for what is about to happen: the transformation of your skin!

Cooksey’s products and services are designed for women who are concerned about aging skin and want to achieve a more youthful look. “Age is marching up behind them, and they are scared to death. That’s when I shine, because I know what to do,” she said. “I want to see people before the surgery. There’s a lot you can do without going under the knife.”

THE FACE PLACE by kc offers an array of services (by appointment only) including facials, anti-aging treatments, exfoliation services, makeup application and lessons, brow and lash tinting, waxing and more. Cooksey is also available for speaking engagements and makeup demonstrations.

Get thee to the fountain of youth!
