Island Tire & Automotive Services
44 Years
Secret to Success: Customer service! Our job is to take care of our customers. We do that by keeping their vehicles safe on the road.

Island Tire was founded on Hilton Head Island in 1973 to serve the automotive needs of the residents and the contractors building the golf courses and communities that made Hilton Head Island famous. Since then, we have evolved as quickly as automotive technologies. Island Tire & Automotive Services has been voted as the Best Place to Buy Tires by Island Packet readers 15-years in a row as well as winning Hilton Head Monthly’s “Best of” honors the last four years.

Berryman W. Edwards moved to Hilton Head Island with his parents in 1973. After selling another business, he purchased Island Tire in 2011 and updated the name to include Automotive Services. “Not only are we a renowned tire sales and repair facility but, automotive maintenance and repair makes up around 65 percent of our business,” Edwards said.

The entire Island Tire & Automotive Services team is focused on bringing back customer care. This starts at the only full-service gas station still in existence on Hilton Head Island. “We love that customers can have one of our guys fill their tank, wash their windshield, and check their oil and tire pressures,” Edwards said. “We know that most people don’t want to have to wait while their car is in the shop, so we give rides anywhere our customers may need to go. The showrooms are outfitted with comfortable chairs, Wi-Fi and a good coffee / tea selection. Several regular customers, bring laptops and cell phones and use Island Tire & Automotive Services as their second office space.”

After 44-years, Island Tire & Automotive Services is taking care of third- and even fourth-generation customers. Taking great care of our customers with commitment to excellent service for residents, local businesses and visitors is a simple formula: Treat everyone like family.

30 Years
Secret to Success: Teamwork

StoneWorks has been around for thousands of years. That’s how long it took to create the magnificent granite, marble, quartzite and other stone materials that StoneWorks has crafted for 30 years.

OK, technically they’ve been in business on Hilton Head Island, in Charleston, Savannah, and the Lowcountry for 30 years – still quite an accomplishment. “It’s because we strive to provide a level of customer service that matches the timeless durability of the stone and tiles that we sell,” says John Baltzegar, founder and president.

John began offering stone products in the Hilton Head area in 1987. He started the venture by making sales calls all day, then returning to the shop at night where he worked fabricating the products. Today, StoneWorks has over 36 employees – many who have been part of the company for over 10 years and more. They are considered family along with John’s actual family. Two sons, Brian and John organize crews, train employees and focus on providing excellent service to their customers. John’s wife, Caroline and daughter, Shannon help manage administrative and design responsibilities making StoneWorks truly a family-owned business with longevity. Their reputation and quality are unmatched.

Hilton Head Symphony Orchestra
36 Years
Secret to Success: Hire the best performers available, hire a conductor who brings out their best work, and have a dedicated team to support them.

Thirty-six years ago, 14 Hilton Head Island residents joined together to play chamber music. That small group of musicians has developed into the Hilton Head Symphony Orchestra, now in its thirty-sixth year, with 70 musicians under contract and world-renowned soloists appearing at concerts. Today, the orchestra entertains its diverse audience with classical music as well as pop and jazz.

Twenty-three years ago, the orchestra presented its first “Symphony Under the Stars” pops concert under a tent at Harbour Town. Now, the event is so much in demand that it is performed under a much larger tent for two nights every April, most recently at Honey Horn and Shelter Cove. This year, the orchestra expanded this program to add an October “Symphony Under the Stars” for two nights in Bluffton, playing to sold out crowds.

Twenty-two years ago, a group of orchestra members joined together to host the island’s first international piano competition. Today, the Hilton Head International Piano Competition, sponsored by the HHSO, is one of the leading international piano competitions in the United States, operating with a three-year rotation of events: an adult competition for pianists 18-30 years of age, a young artist competition for pianists 13-17 years of age, and a festival that showcases past prize winners and other famous piano artists performing music ranging from classical to jazz genres. The competition events draw applicants, artists, and audiences from countries the world over.

The Hilton Head Symphony Orchestra, under the direction of President and CEO Mary Briggs and with Music Director and Conductor John Morris Russell, with widespread financial support including many hours of volunteer time, has thousands of devoted followers.

Hilton Head Ice Cream
35 Years
Secret to Success: Our loyal patrons, and the wonderful people who work here.

Hilton Head Ice Cream first opened its doors on August 13, 1982. From the start, the small shop was a brilliant success with its homemade ice cream. Creegan Edmonds founded the first micro creamery in the Lowcountry at the age of 35; he worked hard to shape a great brand and build a loyal wholesale client base with restaurants and chefs on Hilton Head Island and in surrounding areas. Over the numerous years Edmonds owned and operated the creamery, he was approached by many larger companies that wanted to buy out his brand, but he wasn’t about to allow his creamery, which had become an island tradition, to be taken over by a corporation.

In early 2012, he met a young lady by the name of Kate Delay. After getting to know her, he realized he had finally found the right person to take on the responsibility of keeping the island tradition just that. So, in June 2012, he handed over the keys to his beloved creamery.
Hilton Head Ice Cream’s success over the past 35 years could be attributed to several things. First, the ice cream is amazing; it also may very well be the great branding. But most people would agree that the success is due to the wonderful people who work here.

For instance, Jeff Jukofsky, our maker, is a family man and local to the island. He has been with the company for over 15 years. Every scoop of Hilton Head Ice Cream has been handmade by this gentleman. Will Hull is also local and has been with our creamery for over seven years. Hull has a college degree in hospitality and is our front-of-the-house manager. Chances are, if you have come into the shop for ice cream, you have met him. Christopher Carlisle, our wholesale rep, has been with the company for over five years now. Our success is in large part due to his ability to build and retain a great rapport with our wholesale clients and chefs. If you work anywhere that serves Hilton Head Ice Cream, you’ve most likely had the privilege of meeting him. Our seasonal team is also great. With smiles and a positive attitude, they ensure that our patrons keep coming back year after year for the delicious ice cream and the wonderful, fun atmosphere.

Peter Wolf & Associates
46 Years
Secret to Success: Creating happy clients.

It was 1971 when I arrived on Hilton Head Island to begin my law practice. There were not many islanders in the early years, but my practice, and my knowledge and experience grew steadily. In 1994, Nikki Campbell joined me as my paralegal and office manager. We have been working together to provide the residents of the Lowcountry with the very best estate planning, probate, LLC formation and real estate legal services for 23 years now, and we are still going strong!
To be the best requires providing top quality legal documents for a fair legal fee, which we assuredly do, but it also involves much more. It involves providing helpful, caring, friendly, professional service to our clients, listening to our clients to learn about the needs, goals and desires of each client and their family members, providing solutions, and assuring that the client fully understands the contents of the documents we prepare and how those documents achieve their desired goals. We have found that these qualities make all the difference when undertaking such important legal matters and the financial investment that goes along with them. They are our highest priority.

Estate planning, probate and real estate laws change and improve over the years. For example, commencing in 2017, South Carolina has a new Durable General Power of Attorney Statute that creates stronger enforcement provisions for honoring the Power of Attorney and major protections against abuse of the powers granted by a Power of Attorney, but it only applies to documents signed in 2017 and thereafter. Continuing legal education and thorough updating of documents are both extremely important to me and strongly pursued.

The longevity of my practice has resulted from the many referrals we receive from our clients and the loyalty of our clients when changes are needed. We care about our clients, and it shows.

Old Fort Pub
44 Years
Secret to Success: The sunset view and an outstanding reputation.

As Charles Fraser’s vision of Hilton Head Island was coming to fruition in the early 1970s, he commissioned one of the island’s art community pioneers, illustrator Frank Ballantine, to design a waterfront restaurant overlooking Skull Creek in Hilton Head Plantation, adjacent to one of the area’s Civil War forts. Like its sister restaurant CQ’s, Old Fort Pub was formed from the mind of a man in touch with the Lowcountry and all its nuances. It is these nuances that Pierce and Bonnie Lowrey so deftly protected and nurtured when they purchased Old Fort Pub, along with CQ’s, in 1993.

The only AAA four-star restaurant on Hilton Head Island, eleven years running, Old Fort Pub is a culinary masterpiece with sunset views and charming elegance emanating from every stunning angle and each delicious dish. Recently named in the “Top 100 Scenic Restaurants” by Open Table, and “Best View” by the Food Network, Old Fort Pub has a lot of competition for attention, and Executive Chef Broderick Weaver does not disappoint. His menu focuses on American cuisine with a French accent, featuring sustainable seafood and local farm-sourced produce.

With four decades of staying power, Old Fort Pub is the place for a special occasion, an everyday treat, or where you go to feed your culinary imagination. Guests come for the remarkable sunset view and then are simply wowed by the service and the food. Old Fort Pub has deftly balanced Fraser’s original vision with the future, nurturing guests again and again.

Old Fort Pub is located at 65 Skull Creek Drive, Hilton Head Island. Reservations are recommended. Please call (843) 681.2386 or visit

The Hair Designers
40+ Years
Secret to Success: A strong foundation of education, professionalism and teamwork.

With 40-plus years of excellence in salon services and customer care, The Hair Designers in Village at Wexford on Hilton Head Island could let up on the accelerator if they wanted to. However, that has never been the plan. Fundamental components to their longevity and success is a focus on continuing education, and building the expertise of each team member, to best serve their clients.
“I encourage all my coworkers to take as much education outside of the salon as they possibly can, and then bring it back,” said salon owner, Mark Goodman. “We have a monthly educational class, and everyone teaches what they have brought back. It is a team, working together, to help educate each other in the best new products, new techniques, and new services.”

The latest, exciting, evolution for The Hair Designers is the salon’s certification to offer DevaCurl. “It is all about curly hair,” Goodman said. “The straight, straight look is diminishing, and more and more women are going back to their natural curls instead of trying to fight them down here in the humidity. It’s a whole new way of looking at curly hair, and shampooing and styling it and the products we use on it.

“Their shampoos have no lather. They’re not really shampoos; they’re more cleansing conditioners, so they do cleanse the hair but at the same time they add moisture instead of stripping away the natural oils.” The approach to cutting curly hair complements the DevaCurl system as well. “We cut the hair dry. It’s more an approach of picking up the hair, but not stretching it, and seeing how that curl reacts—holding it very loosely, cutting it, and blending the hair where it naturally wants to fall.”
The Hair Designers has mastered an evolution of expertise that is rare in the salon business, enthusiastically fueling their team and their menu of services every day.

Coastal Veterinary Clinic
27 Years
Secret to Success: Honesty, trust, compassion, and ability to diagnose and treat your pets accurately, effectively and with the mindset that it is exactly how we would want one of our pets to be treated.

Dr. Ben Parker has practiced in the low country since 1989. He is originally from Louisville, Kentucky. He graduated from the University of Kentucky in 1985 and Veterinary College at Auburn University in 1989.

Ben first worked on the island with Dr. Larry Watts, and in 1993 saw the growth in Bluffton and opened Coastal Veterinary Clinic at Moss Creek Village. In 2001 he expanded and built a new state of the art veterinary clinic in Bluffton on Buck Island Rd. Ben and his wonderful staff have cared for the area pets and any injured wildlife brought his way for almost 30 years. Coastal Vet Clinic has also been active in animal rescue, assisting our community with many nonprofit organizations including Maranatha Farms and Rogue Rescue.

I think our longevity and success can be attributed to our honesty, trust, compassion, and ability to diagnose and treat you pets accurately, effectively, and with the mindset that our goal is to treat each client’s pet as one of our own. It is really that simple.

Ben has raised 3 great children in the low country, all currently away at college at the present time, but he’s sure they will return often to visit and fish and boat with their dad on his time away from the office.

Dr. Parker and his staff would like to thank all his clients and friends for their friendship, support, and trust over the last 27 years caring for all their pets’ medical care.

We look forward to the next 27!

CQ’s restaurant
44 Years
Secret to Success: Being a part of an island tradition that has felt like coming home for generations of families.

Honoring an artist’s legacy is a lot of responsibility. In 1993 Pierce and Bonnie Lowrey took on that challenge when they purchased the iconic CQ’s restaurant. Opened in 1973, and nestled under the crooked and lovely live oaks in Harbour Town, CQ’s was originally designed by illustrator Frank Ballantine as his studio, with the architecture reflecting his study of Lowcountry rice barns. Interest in what was going on in the unique building was so great that Ballantine gave up the idea of a peaceful artist’s colony, and CQ’s was born.

Having established itself as a favorite tradition for families visiting and living on Hilton Head Island, the Lowreys found a way to take the restaurant to the next culinary level, while maintaining its charming history. Under Bonnie’s design direction, the interior is filled with décor, treasures, and murals reflecting the history of Sea Pines and Harbour Town; its dining rooms are named with a nod to the land’s heritage: Plantation Room, Rice Field Room, Indigo Room, and Cotton Room. CQ’s is the quintessential Hilton Head stop just off the golf course or for a sparkling special occasion.
Guiding the kitchens at CQ’s and its sister restaurant Old Fort Pub, Executive Chef Broderick Weaver focuses the CQ’s menu on American cuisine with a Lowcountry influence. On any given day, the professionally trained staff creates an exceptional dining experience, practicing their art with sustainable seafood and local resources from area farmers and fishermen.

Ballantine imagined his rice barn-inspired studio as an artist’s retreat, and remarkably, that is exactly what it became. The medium may be a bit different than his pens, pencils, and paint brushes, but the result truly honors his legacy.

Needlepoint junction
30 Years
Secret to Success: Surround yourself with people who know more about something you need than you do. Listen and learn.

One of my favorite quotes is from Albert Einstein: “Within difficultly lies opportunity.”I have never been known to walk away from challenges. I thrive on them.

Unbeknownst to many, Needlepoint Junction has been on the island for close to 30 years. When I bought the store in April of 2014, many people had never heard of it. How could a store on such a small island not be widely known, even if it is not their kind of shop? The previous owner must have done something right, because the store is still standing.

I knew that awareness in itself needed to be addressed. Education and awareness are paramount to all companies. My background is corporate, specifically the high-tech industry. Bringing my business acumen into a retail environment gives me a different perspective than if I had worked in retail my whole life. I see things that others do not. I am not saying I am an expert, because I am forever learning. But I understand the bottom line; I understand the power of relationships with the customers, the vendors, designers and my staff. No two people are alike or work the same way. In all honesty, these relationships are the cornerstones to the success of the business. How I deal with the different people is paramount to our growth in the industry and to the organic growth of the store.

We have been fortunate to experience substantial growth over the past couple of years, which makes me happy and grateful. Nevertheless, I am always on my toes, because in today’s world, you need to be able to move and change direction at the flip of a coin. I am always looking towards the future and what I need to do to create revenue. Coming from a world where thinking outside of the box is necessary, this is something that comes natural to me. Additionally, I have surrounded myself with experts in their genres. I learn from them, and I learn from my customers. We are more than a team; we are a community. Without them I would be sitting in an empty shell of a store.

I love what I am doing as do the people who work with me. This, to me, is the foundation that breeds our success. We truly love what we do and who we do it with—our “family,” our community.

Palmetto Running Company
8 Years
Secret to Success: Loving what we do and personal service.

When passion is put into professional practice, you get something exactly like Palmetto Running Company. “I was involved in a run club and frequently visited a running store before moving here from New York eight-and-a-half years ago,” said Rob Fyfe, owner of PRC. A zealous runner, Fyfe opened his first running shoe, apparel, and accessory shop in Bluffton shortly after arriving in the Lowcountry when he realized there weren’t any stores or run clubs in the area. “One of the first things on my list when I got down here was I wanted to start a running store in my neighborhood,” he said. He followed the success of the first shop with a second in 2014 on Hilton Head Island.
Technology and attentive customer service are integral components of the PRC experience. Where athletes once laced up a pair of Converse or Keds, today’s know-how allows Fyfe and his team to make the best of every step or stride their customers take. “Ours is a very personal service experience,” Fyfe said. “We do an interview with each customer. We ask them what they are doing, do they have any ailments—lower back pain, foot pain, etc.” Using FootBalance equipment, a walker’s or runner’s gait and bio-mechanics are analyzed. This provides the PRC staff with information resulting in an excellent fit, and sometimes a remedy to an existing aliment like plantar fasciitis.

“It’s very rewarding,” Fyfe said. “People will come in sometimes, and they’re literally limping in the store. We’ll get them into the right shoes or recovery sandals, and they will hug me and say, this is a miracle. It’s rewarding helping somebody; sometimes even life-changing.”

For Fyfe, running is a family business. Son, Christian Fyfe, PRC general manager, is the person who manages the daily operations, and matches his dad’s passion for the business and the sport—father and son are running the 2017 New York City Marathon in early November. Starting a run club in conjunction with the opening of PRC has been equally successful. Now with approximately 150 members, the group meets every Saturday to run and socialize. Fyfe estimates that PRC’s charitable efforts with racing events and sponsorships have raised over half-a-million dollars for local charities.

Fyfe, a former marketing, and advertising executive in New York City, brought his passion for running to the Lowcountry, and is finding semi-retirement particularly satisfying. “This is a job, but it’s a job I like to come to every day.” Truly a runner’s high.

Palmetto Running Company is located at 30 Plantation Park Drive, Bluffton (843) 815-1718, and 28 Shelter Cove Lane, Shelter Cove Towne Centre, Hilton Head Island (843) 341-2677. For more information, please visit
