Yummy is Coming: Burger, Bacon & BBQ Festival bigger, better than ever

lider Lovers Unite!” This fall, the cry once again travels across the Lowcountry, o’er hill and dale, tidal marsh to beach, Port Royal Sound to the Calibogue, calling all dedicated burger, bacon, barbeque and beer lovers to attend the premier outdoor food party and culinary competition at Shelter Cove Community Park on Hilton Head Island. Oh yeah, man.

It’s coming to you Saturday, October 7 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Mark your calendars, cleanse your palates and put some extra notches in your belt to make room for the 2017 Burger, Bacon & BBQ Festival bill o’ fare. This annual event is the place, where dozens of Hilton Head Island restaurateurs and slider-masters will compete to win one, or maybe both, of this year’s titles as either the official judges’ “Best of Show” or the “People’s Choice” for the best tasting slider in town.

Burger, Bacon & BBQ, brought to you by Island Recreation Center, will bring your appetite to its knees with beef burgers, pork barbeques, seafood sliders, shrimp burgers, chicken sliders…and anything else you can put on a mini-bun—dozens of choice tidbits to tempt and delight. There’ll be bacon on ’em (of course). Shrimp. Barbeque sauce. Melted cheese. Roasted veggies. Hot sauces. Tasty toppings. Wash it all down with any one of dozens of delicious craft beers, freshly brewed for your tasting pleasure. It’s like throwing a party for your mouth. OMG, I can’t stay focused.

After you and your family indulge yourselves with mega-slider tasting and the kids are having fun on the moon bounce or climbing the rock wall or even bungee jumping, you’ll enjoy live music by the Low Country Jam Band from noon-2 p.m.; from 2:45-5 p.m., hear the hip sounds of Groove Town Assault.

Don’t forget to cast your vote for the People’s Choice, “Best of the Fest.” One vote per customer, please; your vote is cast electronically, just like in a real election (to avoid all that hanging chad baloney and litter and other flotsam caused by paper ballots). Last year’s winner was Char Bar, edging out competitors in a tight race with over 2,000 votes being cast. That’s a lotta sliders tasted! This year, dozens of entrants will try their best to wow your senses for the title of Best Island Slider 2017.

But what does this all cost, you ask? Attendees pay only a $7 entrance fee, with kids age 10 and under welcomed at no charge. Food and drink tickets are $1 each, and activities are a separate fee. As always, all proceeds go to the Island Rec Center’s scholarship fund, dedicated to making sure no kid on the island is ever without recreational activities due to an economic issue. That makes this a win-win-win event.

For great food, good times and a good cause, bring the whole family to Shelter Cove Community Park, Saturday October 7. No pets please. (They tend eat too many sliders anyway, and they struggle with the voting machine, too). The park is located directly behind Shelter Cove Towne Centre on William Hilton Parkway (Bus. 278). There’s plenty of free parking available and lots of fun, food and family frolics, so get there early, and stay the day. See you there!
