Biggest accomplishment to date: Giving birth to my son Christopher, July 30, 2008.
Favorite vacation spot: Private beach or anywhere with my loved ones.
What inspired me to start my own business: The desire to follow my dad’s example and be my own boss—I always have been and always will be.
If I had chosen another career path, it probably would have been… I’m doing what I’ve always wanted. Hair has always been my thing.
Favorite guilty pleasure: Botox, fillers and cosmetic surgery.
When I’m not working, I love to: Hang out with my son and boyfriend; go for golf cart rides, fishing, and jogging—anything outdoors!

Favorite vacation spot: Lake Tahoe
What inspired me to start my own business: I felt the area needed a rental venue that was beautiful and affordable for weddings, parties, and beautiful functions.
If I had chosen another career path, it probably would have been… Television newscaster

One thing I’m exceptionally good at: Decorating.
One thing I’m epically bad at: Knowing when to say no.
How I clear my mind after a crappy day: Relaxing on the beach with my husband, browsing design magazines.
On my bucket list: Grand Canyon; Niagara Falls; Greece for inspiration, Viking Cruise

Lisa Dorobiala
Paw-metto Pooches Pet Salon, LLC

Area of expertise: Certified by The Rochester Institute of Dog Grooming (2005) in all AKC dog breed standard trims and pet skin and coat care maintenance.
Best career advice I’ve received: It’s better to try and fail than to never know and always wonder.
Favorite perk of the job: The love of the dogs. There is so much to treasure and appreciate in connecting with the innocent spirit of an animal.
Worst pitfall of the job: When clients (human and canine) pass away. Going on nine years in business, it never gets easier. Over the years, we grow very close with a lot of owners and their pets and become almost an extended family. When their pets pass away, it very much feels like we have lost one of our own. We constantly remind each other during those hard times that we will all have a huge welcoming committee waiting for us one day.
On my bucket list: I am fascinated with the latest trend of Asian Fusion grooming styles and would love to travel abroad to grooming schools in Malaysia and Japan to learn the art firsthand. I also have big dreams to expand the business one day to incorporate a rescue sanctuary/adoption area, spend a summer traveling cross country in a RV, and last but not least, meet Judge Judy. I love her!
Whom I admire and why: My parents. I was born with a severe hearing loss, and they sacrificed so much of themselves for me to be able to become the independent person I am today. I admire them for always believing in me and for teaching me to always believe in myself.

Kim Block
Maluka; RLB Squared, LLC; Lowcountry Strong Foundation

Best advice I ever received: This has always stuck with me: If you don’t know the answer to a question, then say I will have to get back to you. Don’t rush to respond; get the facts first.
Biggest accomplishment to date: I would have to say my three children.
Favorite vacation spot: Anywhere with my family; one of our favorites is Jamaica.
What inspired me to start my own business: Maluka: my love of shopping and growing up in retail. RLB Squared: the opportunity to be in commercial real estate and build a business while impacting a community.
Charities I am involved in: I started a foundation called Lowcountry Strong Foundation, in partnership with the Community Foundation of the Lowcountry, after Hurricane Matthew. We have helped rebuild homes for families that were unable to rebuild on their own. This has been a wonderful way to give back to the community.
Favorite guilty pleasure: A good bottle of Chardonnay.
When I’m not working, I love to: shop, play golf, workout, paddle board, and spend time with my friends and family.

Missy Layman
Kinghorn Insurance Agency

Area of expertise: Insurance /Partner with Kinghorn, specializing in employee benefits
Best career advice I’ve received: Life advice from my father always grounds me to massive accountability in making decisions: “Remember who you are and where you come from.”
Favorite perk of the job? Worst pitfall?
The best part of my job for 30 years in this community is, and has always been, the privilege of serving and building relationships with amazing people and businesses that make our community successful. Pitfall: hurricanes and traffic between HHI and Bluffton!
How I clear my mind after a crappy day: A long run always helps. When perspective is everything, what really helps is being around my precious family. In their eyes, I am always reminded of what’s most important.
What inspired me to start my own business: Honestly, I love what I do. I have worked in the Kinghorn Insurance brand here for 30 years. My goal was to be a partner. It is a privilege to be able to continue the legacy.
Favorite guilty pleasure: My Lowcountry roots are showing: I absolutely adore boiled peanuts (and a lot of them) with a glass of iced tea. Have mercy!
When I’m not working, I love to… play tennis.

Bess Soper
Bess’ Delicatessen & Catering

As Hilton Head has grown and changed over the decades, one thing has remained constant: good food and service at Bess’, which celebrated its thirty-fifth anniversary in April. Having the distinction of remaining in her original location on New Orleans Road, Bess Soper has kept pace with changing demands without sacrificing the quality of her innovative catering menus.

Hilton Head’s growth has happily spread to booming Bluffton, which, particularly since the advent of Palmetto Bluff, has attracted new residents and upscale quality. For 38 years, Bess and her husband Mike Soper have welcomed new residents and opportunities coming to Bluffton while also supporting the unique small-town aspects of the village.

Sourcing as much produce as possible from the healthy Bluffton Farmers Market, Bess’ menus run from regional and Lowcountry seafood specialties to innovative offerings that are constantly updated and customized, according to the occasion and taste.

Bess guarantees delicious, beautiful presentations, whether you’re serving cocktails or dinner for six to eight people or celebrating with 200 or more—from weddings, day-after-wedding brunches, retirement parties, celebrations of life, birthdays and family reunions.

Oh, by the way, in case you’re not entertaining, don’t miss the deli’s delicious sandwich and lunch offerings where you can still get the best grilled Reuben in the Lowcountry!

Dayle Thomas
Smarty Pants Photography

Specializing in: Children’s and event photography

There is a common thread that seems to have run through every aspect of my life, and that is to approach life as if my hair is on fire. As the mother/stepmother/ foster mother of five children, and having been a human resources director, an emergency medic, an invitation designer and the owner of a customized gift business, moving to Hilton Head Island 13 years ago was going to be my retirement. Thanks to my love of children, life’s stories, cameras and an inability to sit still, I am very happily flunking retirement.

After a wide variety of careers, I can honestly say I have now found my true passion. Being a camera-wielding fly on the wall allows me to find and capture the individual cadence of people and their lives—from a sand-eating one-year-old, to a long-winded eight-year-old storyteller, to a swaggering, self-assured teen, right on up to a couple on their wedding day. I love that who we are at four is not who we are at five…or 11 or 18…and that life is both unscripted and unpredictable. Life is hard; its lessons are harder—but it’s also filled with great little moments that fly by without our recognizing them. The fact that I can run into the surf, completely dressed, to capture the euphoria of a child’s first ocean experience or scramble on top of a chair to get a couple’s first dance and for them to have those moments forever…well, it’s a hair-on-fire thing.

Growing with my clients has always been the focus: seeing the difference in them year after year, capturing it and celebrating life with them as it unfolds is what it’s all about for Smarty Pants Photography.

Amanda Holdredge-Ellis
May River, Made Up

Area of expertise: Makeup and skincare
Best advice I’ve ever received: “Do one single kind act each day for those people who are important in your life.”—Thomas Lynch Jr.
During my college days at Clemson University, a member of the board of trustees was introduced to me by way of my parents. He and his wife took me under their wing and really simplified life in a way I wasn’t capable of at that point. One small act of kindness each day didn’t seem so hard, compared to living a kind life. It was just the right life advice I needed at 20-something.
Biggest accomplishment to date: I have enjoyed considerable achievements in both my personal and professional life, and I believe the best is yet to come. I have spent years cultivating my passion and purpose, and I look forward to many great accomplishments in the future.
Favorite vacation spot: No favorite; I love to just go. I’ve traveled all over the U.S. in an RV; I’ve been as far as South Africa and have seen parts of Europe. I am happy exploring anywhere! I have a case of wanderlust.
What inspired me to start my own business: Helping a client with skincare and finding that perfect shade of lipstick gets me giddy! Because of the unique marriage of the scientific medical skincare world and the creative makeup artist industry, I decided to strike out on my own, offering special-event makeup services in addition to my career with Dr. Farr at Island Medical Spa.
If I had chosen another career path, it probably would have been… equestrian. Long before I completely gave into my girly-girl side, I loved horses! I probably would have ended up working with them in some capacity.
Favorite guilty pleasure: Tacos are life!
When I’m not working, I love to: Go out on the boat with my husband and dogs—Daufuskie, May River Sandbar, anywhere out on the water, I am in heaven!

Katie Knowles
Cyclebar Hilton Head

Area of expertise: Fitness
Best advice I’ve ever received: Don’t give up, keep trying…there will always be an obstacle in your way and a solution around the corner.
Biggest accomplishment to date: My children. Sounds cliché, but your entire world changes, and no one can explain until you experience it.
Favorite vacation spot: I love to travel. I don’t yet have a favorite vacation spot, because I can’t pick one! Some of my top spots include Tahiti, Prague and Paris.
What inspired me to start my own business: I grew up in a family of entrepreneurs; it’ something I’ve always wanted to do.
If I had chosen another career path, it probably would have been… in the medical field—a doctor or nurse. I love learning about the body.
When I’m not working, I love to: Be with my family and friends, be outside, and travel.
The three best qualities that got me where I am today: Perseverance, determination, and hard work
Last program I binge-watched: Game of Thrones

What inspired me to start my own business: I wanted to build an agency that was focused on relationships and doing good work in the communities we serve and do it better than anyone else.
If I had chosen another career path, it probably would have been… a National Geographic photographer.
Favorite guilty pleasure: I don’t feel any guilt from things that bring me pleasure!

Michele Kay-Greene
Needlepoint Junction

Area of expertise: Strategic planning and marketing
Best career advice I’ve received: To be honest, open and listen.
The three best qualities that got me where I am today:
Passion (or just plain heart), determination, willingness to learn.
What inspired me to start my own business:
I am not sure if it was an inspiration or conspiracy of a few people.
How I made my first dollar:
Household chores and Mother’s Helper.
On my bucket list:
To lie on a beach on the Seychelles Islands, to explore the world I have visited through my husband’s eyes, and to start a foundation of some sort.
My perfect day would begin:
With the cat and the dog sleeping until 8 a.m. and not pawing or licking me to motivate some movement from me; yoga; and the feel, the smell and the sound of the ocean outside my door.

Terra Orndorff
The Heavenly Spa by Westin Hilton Head Island

Area of expertise: Everything related to the spa industry: massage, skin care, wellness, hair, and nails
Best career advice I’ve received:
A setback is never a bad experience, just a learning curve.
The three best qualities that got me where I am today: Passion/drive, open-mindedness, and generosity
Kind of work I’d do for free: Spa director, of course, or naturopath
Favorite perk of the job? Worst pitfall?
The favorite perk is getting to try new services and products. The worst pitfall is not being able to help everyone who needs it and deserves it. I am in this industry because I know and believe in the power of touch; unfortunately, there are not enough hours in a day and not everyone can afford this wonderful gift of wellness.
One thing I’m exceptionally good at.One thing I’m epically bad at.
I am really good at skin and skin care, especially of the organic nature. I started my career as an esthetician. I love skin and what it tells us, and I love researching new information about it and recommending the best raw food diet for your skin.I try, but I am really bad at gardening!
Whom I admire and why:
My parents. They both have owned their own businesses my entire life. They are equally hard-working, generous, kind, caring, and passionate about what they do every day. They have taught me by example: loving what you do and doing what it takes to have a fulfilling career with integrity and authenticity.

Kathleen Mayers
KPM Flooring

The three best qualities that got me where I am today: I love a challenge; I work really hard; and I am always looking for better—better products, better colors, better displays, better ways of doing the same things.
Kind of work I’d do for free: Any kind of work with children or animals.
Favorite perk of the job? I love that the job allows me to travel. I love that I get to meet at least one new person each day. I LOVE that my job allows me to be creative.
Last program I binge-watched: Dr. Who, with my oldest daughter.
How I clear my mind after a crappy day: Work out or spend time with my daughters.
On my bucket list: Take my daughters to Nepal. Going to Nepal changed my outlook on life. The country is beautiful, the people are incredible and, more importantly, incredibly happy with so little by our standards. It was a very powerful experience for me, and I want my daughters to have the same.
My perfect day would begin… snuggling in bed, followed by a sunrise breakfast on the beach.
Whom I admire and why:
My mom. She is 92 years old and would have been a world changer if she had been born a few years later when the world was more accepting of smart, together women. She went to college at age 17 in Kentucky, from Charleston, back when girls did not do such things. She lived all over the world when my father was in the service. Sometimes she was alone for years at a time while he was stationed in remote locations. I asked her once how she did it and she said, “I used to tell myself ‘You can do anything for two years.’” She raised five children while always remaining one of the most stylish women I have ever known. She is incredibly intelligent, kind, creative, a cook whose food makes your mouth water just thinking about it, a natural poker shark and the best minnow catcher Tybee Island has ever seen. She is a woman of deep and abiding faith who has had to bury both her husband and one of her sons. She has been my harshest critic and my biggest fan. She makes me want to be a better mother, sister, person.

Theresa Wine
BB&T Insurance Services

Area of expertise: Commercial Insurance Agent & Risk Manager
Best advice I’ve ever received: Never forget where you came from, and be thankful for the journey ahead.
Biggest accomplishment to date:
My children. Being able to watch my boys grow up into such fine young men makes my heart very happy.
Favorite vacation spot: The beach, of course.
What inspired me to start my own business:
Actually, I wish I was the owner of BB&T Carswell (laughing). But truthfully, the opportunity to be part of such a great team of professionals working with our local business owners has been very rewarding.
If I had chosen another career path, it probably would have been… This one is easy because I did pursue another career before dipping my toe into the insurance pond. I was a sales director with Mary Kay for many years. I wanted a more challenging career, and I certainly found that in the insurance industry.
When I’m not working, I love to: Take an early morning beach trip to sit in amazement of this beautiful place I call home.

Best advice I’ve ever received: Believe in yourself, you can do anything if you put your mind to it!
Biggest accomplishment to date: Being a single working mother, raising two sons (Jacob and Jackson), who hasn’t lost her sanity yet.
Favorite vacation spot: We do live in paradise! I love to go to the Sea Pines Beach Club and visit Kristen and Kenny. (Unfortunately, I don’t get there as often as I’d like.)
If I had chosen another career path, it probably would have been… Marine Biology. I love the water and all its beautiful creatures.
Favorite guilty pleasure:
Ben & Jerry’s “The Tonight Dough,” or enjoying girls’ night at Pour Richards.
When I’m not working, I love to: Escape down to Sea Pines’ little private beach and watch the dolphins play.

Wyndham Vacation Rentals

Best career advice I’ve received: Work isn’t always going to be fun, but it should be challenging and be enjoyable overall. If it’s not, you’re doing it wrong!
The three best qualities that got me to where I am today: Hard work, passion, and the ability to function on little sleep!
How I clear my mind after a crappy day: I meet up with my best friends at our favorite local spot, Porter & Pig!
How I made my first dollar: When I was a young child on my first swim team, I couldn’t dive in without lifting my head up, which ended up being more of a jump. I quite literally made my first dollar by keeping a dollar bill under my chin as I dove into the pool! I then carried my passion for the sport as a swim instructor and swim coach, beginning at age 13.
On my bucket list: Train for and complete a full Ironman Triathlon.
My perfect day would begin… with a swim in the Caribbean. But since Hilton Head is the next best thing, it would start with a morning masters swim practice and a hearty meal!

Bride’s Side Beauty

Area of expertise: Premier on-location wedding makeup and hair service.
Biggest accomplishment to date: Last year, our work was featured in a national bridal magazine which was a huge thrill! This particular magazine (The Knot) can be found in check-out lanes across the country. The fact that someone could pick it up in California, Texas or New York and see our name was just amazing to me.
When I’m not working, I love to: Be outside. Ask me if I want to go boating, hiking, kayaking, paddle boarding or just go for a walk. My answer will always be YES!
Favorite perk of the job: Because we are an on-location service, we are fortunate to work in the most beautiful places in the Lowcountry. Our typical “office” is an oceanfront home, luxury resort, or a beautiful antebellum.
Worst pitfall: When you realize that this is not your wedding, these are not your friends and you are not invited to the fancy soiree. No champs for us.
On my bucket list: I have always wanted to go skiing in Colorado, although I have never skied. I picture a fun, yet exhausting day on the slopes, followed by cocktails in a hot tub. That’s my fantasy. My goal is to make it happen for my fortieth birthday in 2019.
Words I live by: A dream written down with a date becomes a goal. A goal broken down into steps becomes a plan. A plan backed by action makes your dreams come true!

If I had chosen another career path, it probably would have been… I’ve always been inspired to serve, so, any career path that would have allowed me to make a difference in someone’s life. I’m lucky God had this one in mind for me.
Favorite guilty pleasure: Enjoying the yummy vanilla ice cream at Jack Frost Ice Cream.
When I’m not working, I love to: Be outside gardening, feeding the flowers, pruning the shrubs—preferably with my husband, and my dog, “Happy” close by.

Celebrations Catering & Events

Jackie Brino started working with the Celebrations team in 2012 as a day-of event coordinator. Though she began as a favor to her friend, Molly, the team quickly noticed that she was a natural in the fast-paced, demanding events environment. Brino is now a fulltime catering and events specialist. Her favorite part of planning is bringing the vision of her brides and grooms to life. Born and raised in North New Jersey, Brino has been a Hilton Head Island resident for eight years. When she’s not planning the perfect wedding or event, she is passionate about cooking and enjoys spending time with family and friends.

Molly Kennedy was born and raised in Orchard Park, New York and graduated from Paul Smith College with a degree is hospitality management. She started her career working for celebrity chef Jimmy Schmidt at the renowned Rattlesnake Club in Detroit, Michigan. In 1996, she moved to Hilton Head Island and started Catering Concepts in Palmetto Dunes as director of catering, with executive chef Andy Borgmeier. She joined the Lowrey Group as director of catering & events in 2002 and was reunited with Borgmeier and team when Celebrations merged with Catering Concepts in 2004. From there, she volunteered on a planning committee for Paddlepower—an annual three-day kayaking and camping fundraiser. She then interned at The Music Hall in Portsmouth, N.H., where she focused on their annual fundraiser. Helping numerous friends and family members plan weddings led her to discover a love for wedding planning. After successfully planning her own, she and her new husband packed up and moved to South Carolina so she could follow her dream! Outside of work, she enjoys spending time outdoors, on or as close to the water as possible, with her husband and their dog, Bandit. Stacks Pancakes of Hilton Head

Kind of work I’d do for free: Cooking! I truly love providing food for others.
Favorite part of the job: Our staff is made up of family by birth and family by choice. My favorite part of my job is that every day I get to see my children and grandchildren, along with some of our employees who have been with us for 15 years.
Worst part of the job: The worst part is that like all families, we do get on each other’s nerves, especially at the end of a busy summer.
One thing I am exceptionally good at; one thing I am especially bad at:
I am the Energizer bunny of the restaurant. If you want something done, ask me; I won’t stop until the job is complete. But don’t ask me for directions. A small island with one main road is an ideal place for me.
What inspired me to start my own business:
Throughout my career in the restaurant industry, I always believed that the path to success lies in treating your employees as well as you treat your customers, but my ideas were not taken seriously. I always told myself that if I had the opportunity to start my own business, I would empower and invest in my employees. That is a core value of Stacks Pancakes, and it has served us well.
On my bucket list: Seeing Alaska by train, boat, car and plane with my husband.
Whom I admire and why: My business partner and husband, Randy. Not only is he a savvy businessman, he is patient, cautious and loyal—the perfect counterbalance to my whirlwind energy.

Kim Crouch, Ashton Harmon, Catherine Davies, Bailey Atkinson, Maggie Washo, Hunter Kostylo, & Kandace Wightman

The faces of CH2 have changed over the years, but the mission remains the same: to put out a visually spicy, mentally stimulating monthly publication featuring Hilton Head Island, Bluffton and the surrounding Lowcountry. The mag is fashion-forward with a focus on local businesses and the people behind them. Articles on current events, food, wine, the arts and entertainment round out the monthly offerings. Beautiful photography and sassy sarcasm accentuate throughout.

Maggie Washo has been at the helm since the magazine’s inception in 2006. Her to day-to-day activities include inspiring her team to greatness by setting an example of hard work and stellar customer service. She reminds them that when it comes to creativity, “the only rule is there is no rule.” Although it’s not been proven scientifically, she attributes a lot of their success to singing aloud throughout the day to Broadway musicals and songs from Disney movies.

Ashton Harmon has been with the magazine since early 2008 and has risen through the ranks to become a formidable director of sales. She loves working at the magazine, but does not let it interfere with her trips to Charleston for socializing or her shopping addiction.

Creativity flows from Catherine Davies, the magazine’s art director, to the many pages of CH2 & CB2, occasionally spilling over onto her hair (currently scheduling her next hair appointment) and her tattooed body (six to date). In her spare time, she enjoys training for marathons and chilling with Roman, Ziggy and Mattie (a dog, bird and cat, respectively).

Kim Crouch has been with the magazine for over four years, and when she’s not helping our clients with their advertising needs, she’s exercising, spending time with her son Jackson and daughter Palmer, and organizing the next social event with friends.

Hunter Kostylo rounds out the creative team with her infectious energy and quirky sense of humor. In addition to handling reoccurring sections of the magazine, she is liaison to many clients, creating hundreds of ads per month—with efficiency and a smile!

Kandace Wightman is decidedly the social butterfly of the sales team and can be found out and about networking most evenings and weekends. Originally from New York, she is a huge Bills fan and is already eagerly anticipating football Sundays spent with Bongo, her nine-year-old Yorkie.

Our latest addition to the family, Bailey Atkinson, has been with us for two years. She is our social media czar, sales associate and office distracter. She’s always looking for a animal to play with or a long conversation to have.

More than anything with work, like most moms, my biggest accomplishment is certainly my children. I am so proud of them, and sometimes I wonder how I did that.

What inspired me to start my own business:
Funny and long story…Oh, I am pretty sure I figured out I was too bossy to answer to anyone else!
If I had chosen another career path, it probably would have been… I actually considered getting my master’s degree in library science! Can you imagine? Favorite guilty pleasure: Watching crime documentaries.

Area of expertise: Licensed Residential Construction
Best advice I’ve ever received: I’m lucky to have been surrounded by a loving family. The advice my parents gave me growing up has been the best: Hard work will attain great goals and honesty is the best policy. Never give up and always believe in yourself. You will come out ahead!
Biggest accomplishment to date: My family. I’ve been married 37 years to the love of my life. We have three wonderful, highly accomplished children. We also have two beautiful grandchildren who have stolen my heart. This is what motivates and supports me to succeed in business.
Favorite vacation spot: The Cloisters at Sea Island. We go every year on our anniversary for five days of beach, golf and great dining!
What inspired me to start my own business: Building someone’s “dream home” is an extremely important undertaking, financially and emotionally. I knew that I could help eliminate the confusion and frustrations. Simply Southern Homebuilder is one of the only companies where the owner truly takes a hands-on approach. The importance of exceeding my clients’ expectations has always been my goal. I also enjoy the process from start to finish!
If I had chosen another career path, it probably would have been…
a Veterinarian. In our family, the number of dogs is the same as people (eight). I love animals and seriously thought about becoming a vet; however, I realized there is a lot of heartache too. When I retire someday, I am thinking about working with therapy dogs!
My guilty pleasure: Craft Beers and micro-breweries. I think beers are seasonal; they are as interesting to me, as wine is to others. I’ve found a new liking for sour beers this Summer.
When I’m not working, I love to: Spend time with family. We all golf and enjoy doing it together. My other love is cooking. I’m hooked on the Food Network station and Pinterest recipes. Sunday dinner together as a family is the best!

Area of expertise: Fine art—gallery owner/director/curator
Best advice I’ve ever received: Get out of your own way.
Biggest accomplishment to date: Moving out of state to a new area and starting a business with a two-year-old at home.
Favorite vacation spot: Taos, New Mexico. My family has 60 acres there. I love to visit with artists, unwind, and take in the incredible scenery.
What inspired me to start my own business: I grew up in this business. My mother started the original Muse Gallery in 1997. I’ve always known I wanted to own my own gallery. My family started vacationing on Hilton Head Island several years ago, and after our last trip, I knew that this was where I wanted to open a gallery. There is such a great appreciation for the arts and there are so many wonderful local businesses here; it felt like the perfect place to not only raise a family, but share my passion and knowledge for contemporary art. And so, Muse Gallery Hilton Head was born.
If I had chosen another career path, it probably would have been…
I haven’t given that much thought since I have been involved in the arts for as long as I can remember.
Favorite guilty pleasure: Reality TV—so bad, but so good!
When I’m not working, I love to: Spend time with family and friends, going out to dinner or to the beach.

Best career advice I’ve received: Don’t be afraid of failure. Be afraid of not trying new things. Failing doesn’t make you a failure; it means you are trying, and success comes from trying new things every day.
Kind of work I’d do for free: Be a food critic
One thing I’m exceptionally good at; one thing I’m especially bad at:
I am truly amazing at Hot Shot Basketball (yes, the little machine at arcades).
I cannot sing. Not even a little bit (no, it doesn’t stop me).
What inspired me to start my own business: My daughter. I wanted to be able to be there for her on a daily basis. While this job takes so much of my time, its flexible time and she works with me! I love that it allows me to be a more present mommy.
Last thing I binge-watched: Big Little Lies. I couldn’t stop!!! Whom I admire and why: I admire my husband more than anyone else in the world. He is my rock and the smartest person I know. He holds our family together with so much grace, and this job, for me, would not be possible without him.

Courtney Woodward May
Realtor I Sea Pines Real Estate- The Cottage Group

Area of expertise: Hilton Head Island real estate
Best advice I’ve ever received: Do the best you can with the tools you’ve got!
Biggest accomplishment to date: It’s a work in progress, but I am most proud that I can continue to raise kind, honest, loving and fun children, with my husband, in a place that I am happy to have called home for over 38 years.
Favorite vacation spot: I am lucky that I live on vacation, so I love to discover the hidden diversity on Hilton Head Island. Lately, I have loved taking the boat to Hudson’s for lunch, a drink or dinner. That is my happy place at the moment. However, this changes frequently, and last week, I might have said dinner on the beach with friends and family.
What inspired me to start my own business: My mother, Lottie Woodward, taught me that real estate is not just about houses, but homes and families. Her work ethic and her relentless commitment to helping others make confident decisions in real estate has kept me going.
If I had chosen another career path, it probably would have been…
I loved what I did before real estate. I was the assistant general manager for Tanger Outlet Centers here, so I think I would have stayed with them had I not been given this opportunity. My other job as a mom may have taken the reins full time, or I might have stayed in Colorado as a snowboard instructor! I had these other opportunities before I joined my mom in real estate, so I feel certain this was the right path for me.
Favorite guilty pleasure: A good cheeseburger and great glass of red wine…and being in the sun.
When I’m not working, I love to: I am always working and I love what I do! Even though I am never “off,” I enjoy being with my family and friends and cherish my time with them. I also love to exercise, cook, travel, and attend live music performances.

Area of expertise: Design
Best advice we have ever received: Never spend more than you make, and stay true to yourself.
Biggest accomplishment to date: Taking a fun idea and turning it into a business we love and seeing it grow every day.
Favorite vacation spot: Asheville, North Carolina
What inspired us to start our own business:
We were both looking for a creative outlet outside of our careers in the school system. This was a way we could de-stress after school and have fun together. It also helped that Elly’s family has a business on Hilton Head Island (Seacoast Insurance). They helped foster our drive to turn what started off as a fun craft into a functioning business.
If I had chosen another career path, it probably would have been…
Elly: A travel blogger, so I could travel and get paid for it.
Jan: Artist.
Favorite guilty pleasure Chocolate and pizza.
When not working, we love to: Go to the beach, play with our dogs, Porter Lee and Charlie, enjoy a glass or two of bubbles, have fun with friends, and be involved in our community.

Andrea Roberts
HHI Hospitality

Area of expertise: Hospitality
What inspired me to start my own business: I believe real success in life isn’t quantified by material things, but instead is about living a life you are passionate about. My husband and I grew up working in the hospitality industry on Hilton Head Island and love to travel and eat; this industry gives us an opportunity to literally eat, live and breathe our passion every day. I also grew up in a hospitality household, so I’ve got hospitality in my DNA. Some days it can be a very demanding business, but at the end of the day, I couldn’t be happier that I live life on my terms and do what I love every day. That’s what being a business owner is really all about. It’s about living life on your terms. It’s about the ability to take risks and create things that matter in your life—things that are meaningful to you. So, I’m very grateful to be able to build our businesses in the community that has always been home to me.
Three best qualities that got me where I am today: I love working with people; I work hard; I never give up.
Favorite perk of the job: For me, it’s about the people and the relationships. I love that I get to meet new people every day. We view our team as family, so it’s also very fulfilling to be able to watch the people on our team grow and progress throughout the organization and in their personal lives.
Worst pitfall of the job: When you are the owner, everything is ultimately your responsibility. Both our team’s happiness and our guests’ happiness is ultimately on me, and if I don’t deliver on that every day, it makes me unhappy. So, it’s important to keep everything in perspective, do my best every day, and realize that every day is a new opportunity and a fresh start.
How I clear my mind after a crappy day: Getting outside and playing tennis is a way for me to clear my head. Sometimes when I don’t physically have the energy to do that, I try to clear my head by walking my dog and remembering how fortunate I am, even in light of whatever problems the day brings. I find that by focusing on what I’m grateful for, it makes the problems a little less significant.
Whom I admire and why: Danny Meyer is one of the best restaurateurs in the world and has been a huge influence. After 30 years, he has made his mark on the industry, constantly evolving and attempting to change things for the better, while making people happy. This job is by no means easy, but when you see someone like Danny who has had the fortitude to be a true pioneer in this business, it’s very inspiring and keeps me motivated to keep striving to be the best I can be.
My perfect day would begin: Waking up, happy and healthy, next to my dog and husband, then enjoying a cup of coffee on the back porch.

The Women of CQ’s
From left to right: Aura Rendon, Jennifer Kane, Shirley Fontaine, Jules Weaver, and Andrea Zdnek

Honoring an artist’s legacy is a lot of responsibility. In 1993 Pierce and Bonnie Lowrey took on that challenge when they purchased the iconic CQ’s restaurant. Opened in 1973, and nestled under the crooked and lovely live oaks in Harbour Town, CQ’s was originally designed by illustrator Frank Ballantine as his studio, with the architecture reflecting his study of Lowcountry rice barns. Interest in what was going on in the unique building was so great that Ballantine gave up the idea of a peaceful artist’s colony, and CQ’s was born.

Having established itself as a favorite tradition for families visiting and living on Hilton Head Island, the Lowreys found a way to take the restaurant to the next culinary level, while maintaining its charming history. Under Bonnie’s design direction, the interior is filled with décor, treasures, and murals reflecting the history of Sea Pines and Harbour Town; its dining rooms are named with a nod to the land’s heritage: Plantation Room, Rice Field Room, Indigo Room, and Cotton Room. CQ’s is the quintessential Hilton Head stop just off the golf course or for a sparkling special occasion.

Guiding the kitchens at CQ’s and its sister restaurant Old Fort Pub, Executive Chef Broderick Weaver focuses the CQ’s menu on American cuisine with a Lowcountry influence. On any given day, the professionally trained staff creates an exceptional dining experience, practicing their art with sustainable seafood and local resources from area farmers and fishermen.

Ballantine imagined his rice barn-inspired studio as an artist’s retreat, and remarkably, that is exactly what it became. The medium may be a bit different than his pens, pencils, and paint brushes, but the result truly honors his legacy.

Engel & Völkers

Area of expertise: Real estate sales and investment
Best career advice I’ve ever received:
While it didn’t come directly to me, I once heard Josh Altman (Million Dollar Listing LA on Bravo) say, “You can have whatever you want, when you do whatever it takes.” His father said that to him when he was young, and it really makes the point eloquently. Success in any form requires dedication, patience and perseverance relative to that thing and disproportionate to everything else. It isn’t easy, but it is simple.
The three best qualities that got me where I am today:
Drive, adaptability, and being willing to fail.
Kind of work I’d do for free: Anything that relates to advancement of a strong education, and animals. I think I would teach a college class for free just to get back in the classroom.
How I clear my mind after a crappy day: I hug my dogs, eat dinner with my husband, pour a glass of wine and get back to work. Then again, I do that every day.
On my bucket list: Drive the autobahn, get my multi-engine pilot’s license (then helicopter), go to space, and generally live a life worth remembering.
Whom I admire and why: I admire anyone who demonstrates strength and clarity of character and a high level of conceptual integration. It shows that you’re not only capable of thinking, but willing to do so in service of the betterment of your own life and those of others.

Jenifer Locklair & Bethany James
Bluffton Lash Lounge

Area of expertise: Lash extensions
Three best qualities that got us where we are today: Being personable, outgoing and hard-working individuals with the drive to succeed are the qualities that have gotten us where we are today.
How we clear our minds after a crappy day: We have such amazing clients and employees, that it’s rare to have a crappy day. We have a lovely cottage with a nice porch that has a quiet and beautiful view of a huge oak tree covered in Spanish moss. When the chance arises, we both love sitting and enjoying some wine or champagne and relaxing for a bit before heading home for the evening.
What inspired us to start our own business: After many years of driving to the island every day for work, it was time to start a business closer to home. We both love what we do for work and decided to make a career of it. The demand had not hit Bluffton yet, and we were excited about offering a new service to the area. We are also able to make our own hours and be our own bosses!
Biggest accomplishment to date: Our biggest accomplishment is owning our own business, of course! We had no idea how busy it would become and so quickly. We are lucky to have the dedicated and hardworking staff that we do.
Last thing we binged-watched: A lot of our conversations with our clients revolve around what current shows we are all watching. It’s too easy to binge watch a series when it becomes available. Our most recent shows that we’ve binged are Shameless (Jenifer) and Bloodline (Bethany).
When we are not working, we love to: When not at work, Bethany enjoys cooking homemade meals and binge-watching TV with her husband, Sebastian. Jenifer enjoys traveling and spending time with friends and family.

Discount Furniture was a tiny startup company in a mini warehouse when I purchased it in 1989. A divorced mom with three teenagers, I had to make it work! And work I did! But with steadfast commitment to customer satisfaction and a wonderful staff who share my values, Discount Furniture and Mattress Outlet flourished and grew to be one of the oldest and most trusted furniture and mattress companies in the Lowcountry!

We offer free in-home decorator service, special ordering with many furniture lines and we are a leader in mattress sales in the area. Come visit us!

Tammy Novak & Cassie Carstens
Island Financial

Area of expertise: Bookkeeping, accounting, payroll, HR
Best advice I’ve ever received:
(TN): If you can get up the courage to begin, you have the courage to succeed. This reminds me daily to stay the course, be consistent, and to try something new. Biggest accomplishment to date:
(CC and TN): We agree that starting and managing a successful company for the past 12 years is our biggest professional accomplishment, but being moms to our own beautiful children is a personal accomplishment that we each cherish daily.
Favorite vacation spot: (TN): Hawaii
What inspired us to start our own business:
(CC and TN): We acknowledged a niche that businesses both large and small need: local bookkeeping, payroll and HR support. We administer these core financial and HR services so that owners can focus on their businesses.
If I had chosen another career path, I probably would have been…
(CC): An elementary school teacher. I think it would be motivating to work in an environment of lifelong learning, and to be surrounded by smiles and laughter. Favorite guilty pleasure: (TN and CC): Chocolate!
When I’m not working, I love to:
(TN): Spend time with my family, travel, and run on the beach.

Sheri Nixon

Sheri Nixon passionately juggles, her career as one of the top producing Realtors in the Hilton Head Island area, spending time with those she holds dear (which includes her clients and friends) and being an active member of the community. Maintaining a devoted relationship with Mark, her husband of 28 years, while raising their three children, Jarrett, Ellie, and Ava, to be caring and enthusiastic about life is the accomplishment she cherishes most. Nixon’s real estate business continues to soar, because she and her buyer’s specialist, Shannon Sheehan, truly care more about the people in the transaction than the ultimate paycheck.

With a preacher as a father and a teacher as a mother, Nixon, came naturally by her compassion to help people. Graduating with a degree in geology from the University of Oklahoma, she was hired in Denver to broker seismic data to geophysicists. Her tenacious negotiating skills were developed as she arbitrated trades between oil companies. Real estate became the perfect career choice to utilize her valuable skill sets, while fulfilling her need to care for others.
