Teeing It Up in the Lowcountry: What to Know About Buying in a Golf Course Community

Author: Kevin King

The azaleas are blooming. Sun and blue skies are here to stay. And it’s Heritage time! In the Lowcountry, there is no better time than spring. This area has so much to offer both visitors and residents. While many hit the beach, shop at local stores, or dine al fresco at some of our high-quality restaurants, there’s one activity that I—and many of you—will always gravitate to, and that’s golf.

Golf is my passion. Growing up playing the sport and now having the pleasure of meeting most of my friends, clients and acquaintances through golf is a real blessing. The sport has a way of bringing people together and engaging the competitive spirit. The advantages of the sport include everything from health benefits and the ability to be one with nature on the course, to mental challenges and valuable life lessons.

The dream of owning a home in a golf course community is becoming a reality for many. What could be better than living just a golf cart ride away from the first tee? Not much, in my opinion.

What I find so special about the Hilton Head Island/Bluffton area is the abundant choices when it comes to playing 18 holes. We have courses designed by the greats such as Arnold Palmer and Gary Player; we have short courses and long courses; we have courses with beautiful marsh views; or we can putt in on 18 at Harbour Town, one of the most iconic holes in all of golf. And, the list goes on.

What’s unique here is the many choices you have when it comes to living on a golf course. Living in a golf course community myself, I can say that the lifestyle is one you can’t beat. And it’s worth learning a little more about what our communities have to offer for the golfer and the non-golfer alike.

Golf course communities are about more than just golf. They can provide the ultimate privacy and one-of-a-kind views. You can experience the camaraderie of neighbors, food and beverage choices just steps from your home, and beautiful clubhouses full of member amenities such as spa, tennis and gym. And, with the huge oaks and Spanish moss typical of the Lowcountry, you won’t find a more serene setting than living on a golf course.

Many of our communities in the Lowcountry have been built around golf courses, and the value of homes built in these communities is sustaining. Living on a golf course has become more popular as homes have maintained value over time and neighborhood turnover is relatively light compared to living outside of a golf community. For prospective buyers looking for a second home in the Lowcountry, the membership benefits and tight-knit community living are great value-adds to buying a home in one of our golf neighborhoods.

Golf is truly woven into the fabric of Lowcountry life. Whether you’re an avid golfer, beginner or prefer a game of tennis, a golf course community may be just right for you.
