Main Street Youth Theatre Presents The Music Man

Author: Special to CH2

Professor Harold Hill ( Daniel Cort) croons with River City’s Barbershop Quartet ( Frank Schuertz, Tom Jaques, Nark Erickson and Jeff Corry) in Main Street Youth Theatre’s production of The Music Man

By turns wicked, funny, warm, romantic and touching, The Music Man is family entertainment at its best. Meredith Willson’s six-time, Tony Award winning musical comedy has been entertaining audiences since 1957 and is a family-friendly story to be shared with every generation.

The Music Man follows fast-talking traveling salesman Harold Hill, played by Daniel Cort, as he cons the people of River City, Iowa into buying instruments and uniforms for a boys’ band he vows to organize—this despite the fact he doesn’t know a trombone from a treble clef. His plans to skip town with the cash are foiled when he falls for prim librarian and piano teacher, Marian Paroo, played by Taryn Wetherington, who sees through him. When Harold helps her younger brother, Winthrop Paroo, played by JP Carr, she begins to fall in love and transforms him into a respectable citizen by curtain’s fall. Complete with a Barbershop Quartet made up of Frank Schuertz, Tom Jaques, Mark Erickson and Jeff Corry and the Conductor played by longtime Main Street Youth Theatre actor and supporter Jerry Wilcox and an ensemble of youth from the Lowcountry you won’t want to miss!

Director Phil Harris, a newcomer to the Lowcountry, brings a wealth of theatre experience. Musical direction is by Beth Corry, who has directed other MSYT shows. And choreographing this fast-paced show is longtime dancer and choreographer, Jodi Layman.

The Music Man opens March 15. Shows are at 7 p.m. March 15-18 and March 22-25 with 2 p.m. matinees on March 19 and 26.
