Pull It Together For Fall Fashion

Allow me to introduce myself as one of the newer members among the sisterhood of local island girls, in other words, a lost soul in need of a “where to find” instruction manual. Of course, it doesn’t take long to find the tastiest cuisine, most happening entertainment and most breathtaking sunsets around Hilton Head Island. In fact, the only real challenge has been dressing the part.

While shopping for novelty beachwear is a breeze, it’s tricky trying to find hip, vintage, fashion-forward apparel and just as tricky trying to avoid debating over the same shirt “she’s wearing.” Or so it was before I discovered the gem of a fashion boutique, “It’s Like.”

Nestled upstairs in Orleans Plaza, It’s Like stocks a colorful collection of chic, show-stopping women’s apparel, along with fabulous accessories that can all be dressed up or down. Dedicated to bringing a blend of LA fashion flair and New York style to the island, this small boutique is intimate, cheerful and eye-catching from every direction. Best part: it’s unlikely you’ll see your purchases anywhere else.

It’s Like’s designs represent “chic casual” fashion, resurrecting the effect of fitting in by standing out. The store’s eclectic collections are brought in from LA and New York, but still complement the style and climate of the Low Country, for example: an assortment of dresses that can be paired with heels or flops.

After browsing through the boutique’s fall and winter line, extending from tunics that can be worn over a pair of jeans (or as a dress with a pair of flats), to an assortment of Bohemian dresses, jackets, leggings and cinch belts, it’s like…obvious that this fall is all about pairing creative layer ensembles.

“The good thing about style right now is that you can pretty much do your own thing with what you have,” said Wendy Wynn, store owner. “Layers work great on the island and all you really have to do is add three or four new things to your collection each season to update your wardrobe.”

According to Wynn, the hottest trends and colors this fall are tapered, “skinny” jeans (Yikes!), tunics, puffed sleeves, army patterns, rich jewel tones, metallics, cinch belts, leggings and fur. As far as the feet go, she said, wedged shoes are big again this year, but still anything goes (flats, pointed toe, peep toe, chunk sandals or flops.)

And well-heeled ladies will absolutely adore the “It’s Like” shoe collection. Within minutes, I eyed a pair of exotic brown leather pumps, sequined leather flops, sophisticated black and gold flats, Bohemian-style copper-wedged pumps, and gorgeous suede boots trimmed in fur that made my heart dance. The shoes are authentic and rich in quality, and yet, most of the prices are less expensive than a tank of gas. “If the shoe fits, wear it,” never sounded so sweet!

It’s Like carries a fine assortment of leather Bohemian-style bags, floppy sun hats, sequined and jeweled purses, big belts and colorful vintage jewelry. Here, you can put together a killer outfit without squandering your rent, and there’s no reason to surrender to a clearance rack. This charming boutique is trendy, reasonable and fun. Alas, it’s like…time to celebrate! Now go get dressed.
