Are You Ready for Some Football?

Enjoy the Season Right Here at Home

Watching the defending Super Bowl champion Pittsburgh Steelers while drinking an ice cold Iron City Light beer and joining in chants of “Here We Go, Steelers, Here We Go,” is the ideal way to spend a Sunday afternoon in the fall, especially if you’re from the Steel City. But why travel all the way to Pennsylvania when you can share the experience with fellow Steeler fans right here on the island?

People travel to Hilton Head Island from all across the country. Ohio, Pennsylvania and New York, in particular, send a lot of people our way. While this is evident most of the year, perhaps at no time is it more obvious than after Labor Day, when the college and pro football seasons kickoff.

Peg and John Sapniewski, visitors from Pittsburgh who travel to the Low Country two or three times per year, say that one of their favorite things to do on a visit is go out to a local watering hole and meet others from their hometown while watching their favorite team.

“We were down here during the NFL playoffs last year, and it was just like being at a bar on the South Side of Pittsburgh,” said John, referring to the experience at Casey’s Sports Bar on New Orleans Road.

September second was a typical summer Saturday on the island. The temperature hovered around 94 degrees; tourists were buzzing around on the holiday weekend; and yet, The Sandbar, a sports bar located behind New York City Pizza on Pope Avenue, was starting to fill up around 3 p.m. The reason? Two teams with rabid fan bases, Ohio State and West Virginia, were each getting ready to start off their seasons.

Nearly every major college and pro team from the East and many from the Midwest has a group of fans that congregates at one of the local establishments to cheer on the team of choice. Some teams, like the Steelers and the Buckeyes, have multiple locations where you can find a cheering section.

At The Sandbar, individual TVs at each booth give patrons the chance to watch whatever game they choose. In addition, a projection screen and multiple flat panel TVs are offered so that bar patrons can view the action.

With the advent of game packages like DirecTV’s NFL Sunday Ticket and the ESPN GamePlan, nearly every game of consequence is televised. And with the number of transplanted visitors and residents on the island, there’s always a place to find your team’s game.
