Take a FACES Staycation: The getaway you need at a price you can afford

Staycation: a portmanteau that combines “stay” and “vacation” and refers to a holiday that takes place either at or near home.

With the economy slumping and gas prices soaring, traditional vacation trips are out of the question for many Americans. But at the same time, the need to relax is at an all-time high. What’s a worn out, work-weary person to do? Why not take a staycation?

FACES DaySpa owner, Patricia Owen, is embracing the concept and encouraging area residents to take time for a break. “People realize in the slower economy that it’s important to take care of themselves. Increased stress makes reducing it and staying healthy more important than ever, and a spa visit is a perfect way to do that,” she said. “When you spend the day at the spa, you’ve indulged yourself just as much as if you had spent ten times as much to go somewhere.”

According to Owen, the day spa industry in the U.S. was born in the early ’90s when there was slight recession. “Instead of going to Europe or to California for their spa vacations, people decided to go to a local spa for the day to get their spa experience,” she said. “Today, the buzzword is ‘staycation.’ The idea is to save time, save gas and save money.”

Your FACES staycation begins with a selection of spa services to suit your schedule and budget. Choose a spa package, or create your own; even one service can set you on the path to peace. Arrive early, if possible, and sip a cup of hot or cold herbal tea in FACES’ cozy relaxation lounge. Read a magazine or close your eyes and take in the serene scents and sounds. If your schedule permits, call ahead for complimentary use of the eucalyptus steam shower before or after your services.

Extend your staycation by taking the spa experience home. “What we offer is a spa lifestyle,” said Owen, emphasizing the residual benefit of your spa visit. “When someone comes for a treatment, we don’t just send them home. We try to help educate them on how they can create the same atmosphere at home.”

Celebrating 25 Years of Success
It’s not surprising that Patricia Owen is on top of the newest trend. A former Estee Lauder executive, she has spent the past 25 years developing and honing her business, starting out as a small mom-and-pop boutique with a makeup counter and growing it to a world-class, award-winning day spa—a testament to her fortitude and foresightedness. “What it takes to be in business here is to be innovative—to be able to re-invent yourself as often as necessary, not just to survive, but to thrive,” she said.

Owen opened the original FACES at Heritage Plaza in 1983, as a place to showcase Estee Lauder products as well as fashion and jewelry. Moving the business to the Village at Wexford, she converted it to a day spa in 1991. Today, FACES DaySpa occupies a luxurious 3,000-square-foot space that includes six soundproof spa treatment rooms, a wet room with hydrotherapy tub, a steam room and locker room with sauna, a quiet relaxation lounge, chemical-free nail studio, express beauty bar, retail spa shop and beauty boutique. FACES offers a full range of day spa services and packages for individuals or groups.

While Owen no longer carries Estee Lauder products, she has developed her own FACES signature line of cosmetics, skincare and bath products. Additional product lines include Murad, Eminence Organics, Osea, Strivectin, Freeze 24/7, Nickel for Men, Creed fragrances, OPI nail products, CustomColour makeup and HomeSpa bath products. You’ll also want to check out Nite Sweatz, a sexy, thermo-regulating collection of sleepwear as seen on TV and in Oprah magazine.

Over the years, FACES has been recognized locally, regionally, nationally and internationally, racking up over 30 awards and honors, including the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Small Business Blue Ribbon Award in 2008, 2007 and 2006. Other honors include being named the 2007 Southeastern regional finalist for the U.S. Chamber’s Small Business of the Year award, the 2006 Small Business of the Year for South Carolina, the first place runner up for the 2005 South Carolina Small Business of the Year, and the 1996 Hilton Head Island Small Business of the Year. In 2003, FACES was awarded the SpaWish Gold Symbol of Excellence and has been a member of the prestigious International Spa Association for the past six years. Salon Today magazine has named FACES DaySpa one of the fastest growing salons and spas in the nation five times. Locally, FACES DaySpa won “Best Day Spa, Best Massage and Best Manicure/Pedicure in the Island Packet Reader’s Choice awards for four years in a row and was twice voted “Favorite Island Spa” by the readers of Hilton Head Monthly magazine.

FACES regularly receives worldwide media attention and was included in Allure magazine’s “A List,” Vogue magazine’s “Best of the Carolinas” feature and Elle magazine’s “Beauty Hot Spots.” Internationally, FACES was featured in a front page article on anti-aging in the Yomiuri Shimbun, the Japanese newspaper with the world’s largest circulation. Salon Today magazine listed FACES’ Golf Widow’s Revenge spa package as one of the top 100 signature spa services in the nation. Other mentions have included the Wall Street Journal, Golf for Women magazine and numerous other city magazines and trade publications.

According to Owen, one of the secrets to success is the way the business is run. “Even when we were small, we operated on big business principles and procedures,” she said, citing her employment practices as an example. “Members of the FACES staff are hand-picked for their professionalism and dedication to providing world-class service to each and every guest. We have a wait list of people who want to work for us, so we really can be selective. We have a very strong team.”

It is a team, though, as opposed to a family atmosphere. “Our feeling is that real A-players want to work on a winning team. They don’t really want to be adopted,” Owen explained. “We want the best of what’s available in the whole country,” she said, adding, “Today’s customer might have had a facial in Paris last week. We have to be world-class every day.”
